About WebP Image
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google and released in 2010 as a single replacement for JPEG, PNG and GIF. It offers both lossy and lossless compression, supports transparency and animation, and typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than an equivalent JPEG or PNG at comparable visual quality. Every current browser decodes WebP, which is why most content delivery networks and publishing platforms now serve it automatically. The trade-off appears outside the browser: many desktop applications, older photo editors, print shops and operating system preview tools still refuse to open a .webp file, and that gap is the reason most people end up converting one.
- Created by Google in 2010, based on the VP8 video codec; the lossless mode arrived in 2011.
- Supports a full 8-bit alpha channel in both lossy and lossless modes, which JPEG cannot do at all.
- Decoded by Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14 and later, Edge and every mobile browser in current use.
- Animated WebP exists and is far more efficient than GIF, but very few desktop applications play it.
- Weak spot: support outside the browser. Office suites, older editors and print workflows still reject it.
