About SVG Vector Image
SVG, short for Scalable Vector Graphics, is an XML based vector format: instead of a grid of pixels it stores the shapes, paths and text that make up an image. A vector file has no fixed resolution, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size, from a 16 pixel favicon to a printed billboard, and usually weighs far less than a bitmap of the same artwork. It is the standard format for logos, icons, diagrams and charts on the web. Because it is code rather than pixels it cannot represent photographs, and many applications, email clients and social platforms refuse to accept it at all.
- A W3C standard since 2001; the file is plain text and can be opened and edited in any text editor.
- Resolution independent: one file serves every screen density and every print size without quality loss.
- Supports transparency, gradients, live text and CSS animation, all of which survive scaling.
- Rejected by most social networks, office suites and upload forms, which is the usual reason to rasterise it.
- Cannot store a photograph; tracing one into vectors produces an enormous file that still looks wrong.
