About GIF Image
GIF has been in use since 1987 and survives for one reason: short looping animation that plays anywhere without a video player. It is limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame and supports only a single fully transparent colour rather than a real alpha channel, so photographs and soft shadows reproduce poorly, often with visible banding or a hard fringe around curved edges. For a single static image PNG produces a smaller and better looking file in almost every case, and for animation modern video formats are many times more efficient. GIF endures through universal compatibility and cultural habit rather than technical merit.
- Introduced by CompuServe in 1987; the GIF89a revision of 1989 added animation and transparency.
- Hard limit of 256 colours per frame, which causes visible banding in photographs and gradients.
- Transparency is binary: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully invisible, producing jagged edges.
- Animation plays in every browser and messaging app, which no other still image format can claim.
- For a single static frame, PNG is smaller, sharper and supports proper transparency.
