About PNG Image
PNG, short for Portable Network Graphics, was published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF and has been the default lossless image format of the web ever since. It stores pixels exactly as they were written, so text stays sharp, flat colour stays flat, and repeated editing never degrades the image. Its alpha channel carries 256 levels of transparency, which makes it the standard choice for logos, icons, screenshots and interface assets. The cost is file size: because nothing is discarded, a photograph saved as PNG is routinely four to ten times larger than the same photograph saved as JPEG or WebP.
- Standardised by the W3C in 1996 and supported by every operating system, browser and image editor.
- Lossless: re-saving a PNG a hundred times produces a pixel-identical file every time.
- True 8-bit alpha channel, so edges and soft shadows blend cleanly onto any background.
- Ideal for screenshots, logos, line art and anything containing text; a poor choice for photographs.
- Cannot store animation. APNG exists but is a separate extension with uneven support.
