About JPEG Image
JPEG, almost always seen with the .jpg extension, has been the standard format for photographs since 1992. It compresses by discarding the detail the human eye is least likely to notice, which makes photographic files dramatically smaller at a quality setting most people cannot distinguish from the original. Practically every device, application, printer and web form accepts JPEG without question, which is why it remains the safest format to hand to someone else. It has two firm limits: no transparency at all, so transparent areas must be flattened onto a solid colour, and lossy compression, so every re-save of an edited JPEG throws away a little more detail.
- Released by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992 and still the most widely supported image format in existence.
- Quality is adjustable from 1 to 100; above roughly 85 the visual gain is hard to see while the file keeps growing.
- No transparency support whatsoever, which is why transparent images need a background colour first.
- Generational loss is real: opening, editing and re-saving the same JPEG repeatedly degrades it visibly.
- The safest choice for email attachments, print submission and any upload form with a strict format list.
